Morning broke full of apprehension for the banker.

“What if his price is too exorbitant? How Can I go back to Ephesus and face my partners with less than some success? If push comes to shove I could borrow on future business whatever it takes I would rather be in debt then drained slowly by that greedy bastard.”

A short walk to the palace where the view of the whole countryside spread below, this hill top city provided ample vistas. The aqueduct water supply that brings clear water from the other side of the mountain undulated across the hills disappearing in the morning mist. Farmers worked their fields women washed clothes in the stream below; gulls circled the garbage dump in the valley. Eloham noticed nothing; his mind was consumed with the outcome of this meeting its importance grew with each passing minute, until the banker was overcome with fear of failure.

“Relax” he told himself.

“Nervous men make easy targets.”

Recalling what his best friend, Menalaus said, he stopped near the entrance to the palace and tried to gain composure. A light fog hung over the lower areas yet the sun broke through on this hilltop palace, he noticed a bird flying over his head and a child played in the edge of the mist below. A dog chased a stick as the child squealed with delight every time the animal fetched the stick and returned. Eloham’s thoughts rolled in another direction as he watched the child and dog play below.

Waiting inside no more then three minutes when the lanky Asclepiodotus strolls out to meet our friend extending a warm greeting as he fretted with his chiton and tunic that did not want to cooperate.

“Good morn Eloham let us take a walk in the glorious light of Helios, his majesties garden is a true delight to meander through.”

Without a word Eloham falls in with the long legged aristocrat, they both ease through a narrow gate past a guard who nods at the two as he recognizes Asclepiodotus. They pass into a world of fruit trees and colorful flowers, smells of nature and insects buzzing around, Eloham sees nothing his mind preoccupied. Finding a secluded bench behind an enormous full bush, the two settle in to talk in private.

Still fiddling with his chiton the tall aristocrat starts talking before Eloham is seated.

“Great Zeus the king wears one out, he backed away from his table at sunrise, and the rest of us were forced to stay until he departs. The man is the god of wine consumption Dionysus himself could not drink with Eupator. The king never gets
